The homemade decoration of Easter eggs is the most fun if we involve the children. It is an easy, fun, very satisfying task and we also make them part of traditions, legends and as always of fantasy.
Here the imagination has no limits but we are going to indicate the most essential to start with this task that will fill you with hope.
Depending on the age of the children we will proceed in one way or another. If they are older, we will take several raw eggs and make two holes, one in one pole of the egg and the other in the opposite pole. Then we will blow through one of the holes until the egg is completely emptied.
In the case of younger children, it is preferable to boil the eggs because the shell may be too fragile for them and they will break.
As for the rest of the materials, we can use cardboard or newspapers to protect the table and the floor, wide-mouthed jars for the dyes, a large spoon to take out the dyed eggs, an oven rack with newspaper to dry the eggs, the egg cartons will be used to work and later store the eggs, plastic bib or apron.
Preparing the Easter eggs
Now we are going to see what materials we will use for the activity: boiled or empty eggs, egg dyes, hard crayons to paint on the egg, food coloring markers, non-toxic markers, edible homemade finger paint, stickers, napkins to make confetti and pair of scissors. Glitter markers are very striking and then of course all kinds of materials that we want to add (moving eyes, colored wool, fabrics, etc.).
Another option for coloring Easter eggs is natural food dyes. For this we would use:
- Brown: with outer layers of onions, tea or coffee
- Yelow: with coloring form paella, or saffon
- Blue: with cranberry juice
- Violet: with red beet or onion
- Green: with spinach
To dye the eggs, we would mix the source with half a tablespoon of vinegar and a little cold water in a pot. We would add the raw eggs and let them boil. Cook them over low heat for 10 to 15 minutes. The longer they cook, the darker the color will be. You should let them cook for at least 8 minutes.
And the only thing left is…..Enjoy!!!!
